What is PRK/LASEK?
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) and LASEK (Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) are advanced laser eye surgery techniques designed to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. It precisely reshapes the cornea, eliminating refractive errors that cause blurred vision. PRK/LASEK does not require the creation of a corneal flap compared to other procedures, making it a viable option for patients with thin corneas or those involved in contact sports.
How is PRK/LASEK Procedure Performed?
The PRK/LASEK procedure begins by gently lifting the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) to gain access to the tissue beneath the cornea. An excimer laser is then used to reshape the surface of the cornea according to the patient’s specific refractive error. After the procedure, the epithelium is either removed (PRK) or replaced (LASEK). A protective contact lens is placed over the cornea to promote healing. The process is quick, usually taking about 15 minutes in total for both eyes.
